In the History of Art major you will discover ideas and practices that challenge your preconceptions of the history of art in exciting and surprising ways. You will have the opportunity to study historical and contemporary art across a range of visual forms from famous art works to caricatures, from shop window displays to exhibition designs, from films to photography, and from advertising campaigns to maps. Our staff have expertise in a number of areas including Renaissance Art and Architecture, Art and Architecture of the Seventeenth Century, Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Art, Aboriginal Art, as well as genres such as portraiture, landscape painting and print media, and in museum practices and the history of collecting. Level 1 is designed as an introductory year in which you take two survey units that will prepare you for more focused study at Levels 2 and 3. In Level 2 you will select two units and at Level 3 four units from a range of units that deal with particular genres such as portraiture or print media, or from units that address the art of historical and contemporary periods. As you progress from Level 1 to Level 3, you have the opportunity to undertake a unit of study overseas as staff take small groups of students to locations such as Paris, London or Rome where you can study some of the best art collections, galleries and museums in the world.
